Road rules in Belgium
When you are hiring a car abroad, it’s useful to be prepared for the different driving laws in the country you are travelling to as well as checking the documents you need to carry.
To help make your trip to as smooth as possible, we've put together some of the key road rules in Belgium.

Which Side of the Road?
In Belgium, please drive on the RIGHT side of the road.
Unique Country Driving Laws
- Lots of crossings are equipped with Cameras, if caught jumping a red light you can be fined heavily.
- Mobile telephones may only be used with a hands-free stsyem.
Speed Limits
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: 31 mph (50 km/h)
- Motorways and National Roads 43 mph - 50 mph (70 km/h - 80 km/h)
- A limit of 18 mph (30 km/h) may be indicated at the entrance to a built up area or in school areas
Please be aware of changing speeds indicated by road signs.
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
- It's compulsory to wear a seat belt, including in the back seats if belts are fitted. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure all passengers wear their belts (and the driver will be fined if passengers are not belted in).
- Babies up to 13 Kg must travel in a car seat, facing backwards.
- Children 13 Kg to 18 Kg must travel in a car seat, facing forwards.
- Children 18 Kg to 36 Kg must travel in an adapted car seat using the normal seat belt.
- Children measuring less than 1.35m must travel in an adapted car seat.
Please note - It is the child’s parent / guardian or vehicle renter’s responsibility to fit the child seat.
Compulsory Equipment in your Avis rental car
It is compulsory to carry the following documents in the car at all times:
- Driving licence.
- Insurance certificate.
- Vehicle registration documents.
- Passport/proof of identity.
- Proof of payment of road tax and car radio tax where applicable.
All vehicles must also carry:
- A warning triangle. In the event of an accident or breakdown, the triangle must be placed 30 meters behind the vehicle on ordinary roads, and 100 meters on motorways, to warn following traffic.
- A first aid kit.
- A fire extinguisher.
- A reflective vest must be put on before getting out of the car in the event of an accident or breakdown on any road.
